"Someone once tried to convince me that DIY music meant lo-fi music that lacked substance and suffered from poor production and lack of real talent. This of course is absolute rubbish, especially when confronted by such gems as the latest release from Yorkshire DIY outfit Protectors.

‘Soul And Fire (Is All We Ever Need)’ sees the band grow, not just from a three to a five piece, but also in maturity of sound and lyrical depth. Right from opening track ‘Old Microscopes’ you are in no doubt where we are going with this. Quality indie-pop music, that is at once familiar, whilst also been refreshingly new. It’s an easy album to fall in love with, an album that has the beauty of having 9 tracks that work really well as a complete long player but are equally as capable of standing tall on their own. Tracks like ‘No Satellites’…

It’s hard to pick a stand out track, as they are all equally as palatable as each other, so let’s pick ‘Four Sevens’. Jangly upbeat indie guitar, easy sing along lyrics. It’s a great track and bound to be a dance about favourite for the live set. But the same could be said of ‘Uniform’, maybe it has a bit more depth and is slightly more punk than pop, but again it’s another track that begs the live stage. And so it goes for the remainder of the album. It’s hard to say anything bad about anything contained within ‘Soul And Fire’. Take the track ‘South Carolina’ for instance. An absolutely storming intro leads into great guitar hooks, beautiful harmonious vocals that combine to provide you with a definite earworm, that you’ll find bouncing around inside your skull. You could argue it ends a bit too abruptly, that’s only because you’re craving for another taste of that opening riff.

Protectors have shared stages with the likes of The Wedding Present and The Cribs, and quite rightly so. Chris and co have pulled of a great album that sits comfortably near the top of the indie pile, alongside their heroes and influences. It also goes to prove that DIY music is far from inferior, but we knew that already – right?

‘Soul And Fire (Is All We Ever Need)’ is out Monday 8th December on Bombed Out Records – buy it! In fact act now and see if you can secure a copy on limited edition green vinyl."
